Through Machado Joalheiro, the French high jewellery brand Akillis is already present in the Portuguese market. In celebration of the brand’s debut in Portugal, JoiaPro Luxury Watches spoke to the brand’s international director, Dora Moreira.
How do you summarise Akillis’ history?
Akillis is a French jewellery brand, created in 2007 by Caroline Gaspard, focused on both women and men. It’s audacious and different, in contrast to a traditional market. At the time, the founder thought “What doesn’t exist yet, what can I do differently?”. So she came up with the idea of using words in the simplest and most authentic way, which gave rise to the piece “Bang Bang”, known as “The Bullet”, a twist on Quentin Tarantino’s music in “Kill Bill”. At the time, Caroline realized that the men’s market was going to grow, and that was her bet. At the time, she was also excited by innovation and began to find out about the more advanced and innovative watch industry, which had already been working for more than ten years with titanium, a material that is not rare, but very hard, the hardest in the universe, with the characteristics of being hypoallergenic, very light and difficult to work with.
Can we assume that “The Bullet” is Akillis’ most emblematic piece?
Yes. Bang Bang and Fatal Attraction are two types of bullet totems, with the notion of object, movement, and purpose… which are the characteristics of 40-year-old Caroline’s vision and personality, around movement, force, and purpose and the notion of the inclusivity of everyone choosing their own personality.
The brand has now arrived in Portugal. What are its main objectives?
Existing and being able to offer the Portuguese market and consumers our proposal for different and alternative jewellery, attractive to young people who are beginning to take an interest in these products. One that is less intimidating and more attractive from a design point of view.
