Continuing to expand its adventure in architect-designed watches, Lebond has unveiled its latest timepiece with the winner of the 2011 Pritzker Architecture Prize, Eduardo Souto Moura. The new watch explores the limits of modernizing a classic watch silhouette.
In 2023, Lebond launched its first wristwatch in collaboration with the famous architect Álvaro Siza, featuring a square design inspired by one of Siza’s works. Just like last time, Lebond invited Souto Moura to design a wristwatch that reflected its architectural codes. The Portuguese architect is known for his consistent and highly recognizable style that uses simple lines, resulting in minimalist creations that convey a sense of serenity. But instead of using one of his previous works to inspire the piece, Souto Moura used his signature style to reimagine the classic driver’s watch.
Souto Moura’s idea for the creation of this collaborative watch was for the piece to look and feel as thin as possible. Taking the 12 as a reference, the architect designed two versions, “Original and Dark”, in a classic round shape, while the dial undergoes an intriguing twist by being turned at a 30-degree angle. “The 12 is the reference and we rotated [everything] 30 degrees for optimum visibility on the wrist,” explains the architect. Thus, the dial, movement, and crown of the watch were all placed at the same 30-degree angle.
Always in favor of clean lines, Souto de Moura left the dial as pure as possible. Stick-shaped hands create a sharp contrast with the color of the dial, precisely indicating the time. As 12 is the reference, Souto Moura mixed Arabic numerals with the accentuated hour hand, automatically capturing the attention of your eyes and guiding them through the common act of telling the time, thus forgetting that you are doing so with a difference of 30 degrees.
